In the northwestern part of the Bačka plain, Sombor occupies an area of 1,178 square kilometres, with one urban and 15 rural settlements. Flowing on the western sides of the town of Sombor is the Danube River separating it from Croatia, with the Telečka plateau in the east, it boarders with Hungary in the north, and is open to inner Serbia on the south. The average altitude of the Sombor area is only 90 m. Sombor is located 60 km south-west of Subotica, 100 km north-west of Novi Sad, 175 km north-west of Belgrade, 220 km south of Budapest, and 345 km south-east of Vienna. According to the data from the 2011 census, there were 85,903 residents Sombor.
