In 2022, a total of 30 million m3 of wastewater will be treated

According to the data of the Statistical Office of the RS in 2022, 3,200 million m3 of water was used in the industry sectors, which is 14.2% less than in 2021. The same data show that only 30 million m3 of water of the specified amount of water was purified.

In the report “Usage and protection of water from pollution, 2022”, the Republic Institute of Statistics states that out of a total of 3,200 mil. m3 of captured water in the industry sectors, 99.4% is water from own water intake (98.0% surface water and 1.4% underground), and 0.6% from the public water supply.

Water used for industry needs in 2022, viewed by sector and compared to the previous year, recorded the following trends: Mining – growth of 21.1%, Manufacturing industry – decrease of 5.9%, and Supply of electricity, gas and steam – decrease of 14.6%.

The same data show that out of a total of 118 mil. m3 of waste water in industry, 47.5% is water discharged from the Electricity, gas and steam supply sector, 33.9% from the sector

Manufacturing industry, and 18.6% from the Mining sector.

In 2022, a total of 30 mil. m3 of water, of which primary treatment 63.3%, secondary treatment 20.0% and tertiary treatment 16.7%. The largest share in refined  industry sector is dominated by Production of basic metals – 18.7%, followed by Production of chemicals and chemical products – 14.5%, Production of food products – 12.4%, and Production of paper and paper products – 11.4%. All other areas of the sector industries have a share of purified water of 43.1%, according to the report of the Bureau of Statistics.

The aforementioned data undoubtedly indicate the need to build a larger number of wastewater treatment plants, which is one of the primary goals of the “Clean Serbia” project. The project envisages the construction of 165 WWTPs, which is almost half of those needed for the whole of Serbia.
